“Benefits of developing vocational skills in young children”
There are many benefits of developing vocational skills in young children.These skills help children become independent adults who can support themselves.As these children gain skills at a tender age, they gain experience in selected disciplines in addition to confidence.
Vocational skills are those hands on skills that help people earn a living.For instance a person working in a restaurant,a workshop, saloon,construction company etc and such a person can also start a cottage business using his/her vocational skills.
According to research in Uganda,At age 15, 18% of girls and 15% of boys are out of school. School participation is highest for girls at age 10 and for boys at age 11.
Recently in Uganda, vocational training has been limited to youths in vocational schools and some few secondary schools. At wisdom Junior school Orphanage of HILCO foundation we believe that a young child who is trained vocational skills can sustain himself in future even if that child may not go far up to University with education.
Our research has shown that most people do jobs in line with the skills they learned from home during their young age though some have different professions.Therefore,we include vocational education as part of the curriculum for our young boys and girls to complement their learning and expand their potential and opportunities.
WHY VOCATIONAL EDUCATION?
Vocational education provides people with occupational or work related awareness, knowledge, skills and attitudes towards work.
It prepares people to work as technicians to take up employment in a skilled craft or trade as a business person.
Vocational education is that type of education given to a child to prepare him/her gain employable skills.It is the training in skills and teaching of knowledge related to a specific trade, occupation or vacation in which the child wishes to participate.
The advantages of vocational education for young children are;
Lower chances of unemployment. Acquiring vocational skills can help children have better chances of having a job, becoming self employed or starting an apprenticeship that can lead to a better job in the future.
Learning and executing these practical skills set their future to be much more positive, opening up opportunities to be employed in secure, stable and profitable jobs where they can continue developing their skills and potential.
Vocational skills allow Children to be prepared to create a source of income whereby they are assured of earning through their skills and knowledge,hence reducing their chances of poverty and improving their quality of life.
Poverty and high rates of unemployment in youths affect their physical and mental health due to joblessness can be reduced in the community.
Early marriages and unions of boys and girls in search of stability, which puts them in a tough position and in the worst-case scenario,at the risk of experiencing violence and abuse would also be minimised among the youths.
Investing in vocational skills development in young boys and girls can bring great change in families and communities where these children come from.It can help to increase social cohesion and achieve greater economic development.
It’s our expectation that vocational training in primary schools can reduce early pregnancies due to self esteem of girls due to the fact that they would have future expectations of having a better life like owning a business and getting a desired job.
